Islamic Perspective on Adultery

1. Quranic Commandments on Zina

Allah SWT declares in Surah An-Nur (24:2-5):

"The unmarried man or woman guilty of illicit relations—give each one hundred lashes, and let no compassion deter you in enforcing Allah's law if you truly believe in Him and the Last Day.

A fornicator may only marry another fornicator or idolater, and this union is forbidden to believers. Those who accuse chaste women (of adultery) without producing four witnesses must be lashed eighty times, and their testimony rejected forever—they are the defiant sinners. Except those who repent and reform, for Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."

2. The Wisdom Behind Harsh Punishments

Islamic law prescribes severe penalties for adultery (zina), but only after establishing:

  • Preventive measures promoting moral purity
  • Conclusive evidence requiring four eyewitnesses or voluntary confession
  • Social safeguards protecting the innocent

This system reflects Islam's balanced approach—prioritizing prevention over punishment while maintaining societal moral boundaries.

3. Strict Evidentiary Requirements

The Sharee'ah mandates four male witnesses who must:

  • Have directly observed the physical act of penetration
  • Provide identical testimonies without contradictions
  • Be morally upright individuals

As narrated by Imam Malik (RH), even the Prophet ﷺ demanded verified confessions and proper tools for punishment, showing Islam's emphasis on justice over haste.

4. Islam's Preventive Approach

Rather than focusing solely on penalties, Islam:

  • Encourages early marriage to fulfill natural desires lawfully
  • Promotes modesty (haya) in dress and interactions
  • Establishes family values through parental guidance
  • Forbids indecent media that normalizes immorality

The Prophet ﷺ advised: "Whoever protects their private sins with Allah's cover, Allah will conceal them in this life and the Hereafter." (Malik)

5. Consequences of False Accusations

To protect social harmony, the Quran (24:4-5) prescribes:

  • 80 lashes for false accusers
  • Lifetime ban on their testimony
  • Labeling as transgressors (fasiqeen)

This deters baseless rumors that could:

  • Destroy marriages
  • Tarnish reputations
  • Normalize immorality through frequent accusations

6. Repentance and Allah's Mercy

The Quran concludes with hope:

"Except those who repent and reform—indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (24:5)

This demonstrates Islam's dual emphasis on:

  • Justice for preserving societal morals
  • Mercy for sincere repentance
